O ligre não existe na Natureza, é um animal criado pelo homem como resultado de cruzamentos intencionais entre leões e tigres. Estamos assim perante um híbrido, que, por esse motivo, é quase sempre estéril. Apesar de ainda não se saber muito sobre esta criatura, tudo indica que, dadas as suas características, se vai tornar o maior felino conhecido.

Neste cruzamento, ao que parece, o gene que determina o tamanho perde-se, crescendo então estes animais de forma inusitada, podendo atingir uma altura corporal de 1,30 m e um comprimento de 2,60 m e pesar mais de 400 kg!

Cruzamentos
Têm sido feitos cruzamentos de pai leão com mãe tigre, e também o inverso, pai tigre e mãe leoa. Ao que parece, os animais resultantes destes dois tipos de acasalamento têm características físicas bastante diferentes, principalmente no tamanho e na coloração do corpo. Podem nascer animais com a coloração típica dos tigres mas com juba de leão, ou um animal que dificilmente se identifica com o tigre ou com o leão, já que apresenta simultaneamente semelhanças com ambos.

Aberrações
Os poucos animais que não nascem estéreis são ainda cruzados entre si, dando origem a verdadeiras aberrações de felinos.
