Distribuição
Esta espécie só se encontra na Península Ibérica, Portugal e Espanha.
Em Portugal esta espécie está prestes a ficar extinta. E este problema parece não ter retrocesso, tal é o ponto em que se encontra a situação desta espécie.

A sua distribuição geográfica faz-se por pequenos grupos a viver no Algarve, Vale do Guadiana, Serra de São Mamede, Vale do Sado e Serra da Malcata.

Perigo iminente
O lince ibérico é o carnívoro mais ameaçado da Europa eo felídeo mais ameaçado do mundo, e tudo isto acontece em Portugal, sem que haja verdadeiramente um plano de acção, nem verbas que permitam inverter esta tendência.

Actualmente, está reduzido a uma população que se resume a cerca de 30/40 animais, no máximo, a viver em liberdade.

Causas
O homem foi o principal responsável por este desaparecimento, devido à caça que lhe deu durante o último século.

O desaparecimento do habitat natural destes animais também foi acontecendo, não tendo sido, ao longo dos anos, minimamente salvaguardado pelas autoridades responsáveis.

Por último, a doença hemorragica viral, que dizimou as grandes populações de coelhos bravos, que eram o principal alimento destes animais, acabou definitivamente por criar o vazio em que agora se encontra.

O facto de os poucos animais existentes estarem dispersos por um longo território, leva a que não haja reprodução, e que o fim destes felídeos esteja próximo em território português.

Com o desaparecimento anunciado do lince ibérico, o territírio nacional deixa de contar com a presença de grandes felinos.
